Kamala Harris’s choice of Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate is thrilling mapmakers and GIS enthusiasts. Walz, a GIS “nerd” and former teacher, has passionately used mapping for problem-solving, from predicting global crises with his students to streamlining social services in Minnesota. With Harris’s fondness for Venn diagrams, this data-driven duo is raising buzz as a team embracing complexity through visualization—quite a contrast to Donald Trump’s infamous Sharpie-altered hurricane map.

It is indicative of a mind that accepts complexity and seeks to account for it, instead of oversimplifying it into a false but attractive narrative.
